What originally attracted me to Microsoft technology 30 years ago were two key factors.
- Microsoft products integrated extremely well with both Microsoft and non-Microsoft technologies, for example SQL Server integrating across multiple platforms and tools.
- You could learn Microsoft technology at very low cost or even for free. For example, Microsoft once provided SQL Server Developer Edition CDs at no cost, including nearly all Enterprise Edition features for learning and development purposes.
That accessibility helped create generations of highly skilled Microsoft professionals across the world.
Today, however, access to Copilot within Microsoft Fabric can represent a significant financial barrier for many people. Even lower Fabric capacities still carry costs that may be manageable in Western economies but completely unaffordable elsewhere.
For someone living in parts of Africa, Asia, or South America on less than $300 USD per month, paying for Fabric capacity simply to gain access to AI tooling could be a complete deal breaker.
Historically, every major technological shift — from the plough, canal systems, and steam engines to computers and the internet — has created periods of economic volatility while society adjusted to the new technology.
AI is no different.
Across the globe there are potentially millions of future AI, analytics, and data professionals who may never get the opportunity to develop their skills if access to AI tooling remains financially out of reach.
Providing a genuinely accessible or free entry-level Copilot experience within Microsoft Fabric could therefore deliver enormous long-term benefits:
- More people gaining AI and data skills globally
- Faster innovation and problem solving
- Greater adoption of Microsoft technologies
- Stronger long-term commercial growth for Microsoft
- Increased global capacity to address challenges such as climate change, food supply, healthcare, housing, water management, and conflict resolution
Microsoft already understands the importance of accessibility through the free Microsoft Fabric trial experience.
Expanding this philosophy further into AI tooling and Copilot capabilities could help democratise access to the next generation of technology innovation.
In the long term, this may not only be the socially responsible approach, but also one of the smartest commercial investments Microsoft could make.
